Acupuncture to Support Pregnancy

by Michaela Rinkel

Pregnancy is a time of profound change and excitement, but it can also come with a range of challenges, from morning sickness to pain and disrupted sleep patterns.

Acupuncture can offer so much relief and support through these common pregnancy issues, helping to maintain overall maternal wellness and enhancing the pregnancy experience.

Some of the pregnancy issues we commonly work with in clinic include:

Morning Sickness:

Nausea and vomiting is a common concern in early pregnancy, and for some women, can continue into their second and third trimesters.

Acupuncture can help by stimulating specific points that balance the digestive system and reduce nausea.

Many women find relief through regular acupuncture sessions during the first trimester, until the nausea resolves.

Pain:

As pregnancy progresses, physical and hormonal changes can lead to discomfort such as headaches, back pain and pelvic pain.

Acupuncture aims to alleviate these symptoms by improving circulation, reducing muscle tension, and promoting relaxation.

Sleep issues:

Sleep disturbances are common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and physical discomfort.

Acupuncture can support better sleep by utilising points to calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Preparation for Labor:

In the later stages of pregnancy, acupuncture can be used to prepare the body for labor.

There are numerous points and techniques that can help draw energy and guide the baby downwards, assist in optimal fetal positioning, release pelvic tension, aid cervical ripening and calm and focus the mind before labor.

Other pregnancy conditions:

Some women may experience more complex conditions during pregnancy such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, placenta previa and cholestasis.

These all require close monitoring by an obstetrician, but acupuncture can be a wonderful supportive treatment alongside this, and our practitioners are well informed in managing this type of care.

During an acupuncture session, your practitioner will perform a thorough assessment of your health and pregnancy concerns.

They will select acupuncture points based on your individual needs to promote balance and alleviate symptoms.

We will always work within your comfort levels, and ensure you are comfortable, warm and relaxed on the table.

Acupuncture offers a natural and supportive approach to managing pregnancy issues, addressing both physical discomforts and emotional well-being.
